By the time the wait was over, the sun had long risen, and Star had noticed the area around the opening in the building was recessed with seats and large screens that floated around the stadium. These seats started to fill as humans meandered in. It wasn’t until the stadium seemed ready to burst that the arrow above them flashed a few times and then changed direction.

Star jumped upright into her chair and shoved her hands back into the pylons, leading her ship up amongst the wave of other competitors around her. She flew upward, heading toward the marker on her map. The planet quickly sped away from her, and she was left up in orbit, the dazzling display of stars spread out along her canopy.

Arriving at the marker, there was a line of blinking lights that the other ships were lined up behind. Star took her place next to them, just now realizing how small her ship was compared to the others around her. They were still on the smaller side, but they easily dwarfed hers, each one at least two to three times bigger.

The other ships were boxier than hers and had a wide variety of alien text and images painted on their sides. Floating out in space were cameras and various screens playing flashing images of human products and text. Her ship sat perfectly still with no effort on her part while all of the other ships constantly had to re-correct their positioning to remain in the same spot, their thrusters constantly turning and pushing out streams of hot burn-off.

After waiting for only a couple of minutes, lights began to illuminate, creating a traveling path that extended into the dark space in front of her. The lights along the track and in front of her began to blink, and the cameras panned across the line of racers. Star’s radio crackled to life and began to speak in a boisterous voice.

“Alright, everybody, we are looking for a good clean race today.” There was a pause before the man kept talking. “Just kidding! No holds barred. Do whatever you need to do to win. Who will take home the one-hundred-fifty thousand credit grand prize!? Stay tuned to find out!”

The voice faded before another one, much less enthusiastic, filled the cabin.

“Alright, everyone, just hang tight for thirty seconds for a commercial break, and we’ll be right back into it, okay?”

A little timer popped up in the void above them, showing various alien texts that were unreadable to Star. She waited, glancing around at the others as the track blinked with every change of the text.

The same voice as before filled her cabin once more, just as lively. “Alright, racers, get ready! Three…two…one…”

There was a pause as tension filled the air. Star held her breath, watching the track with her ears folded backward.

“Go!” the voice rang into her cabin, and she jolted her ship forward amongst the wave of other racers. The cameras kept pace with the ships, but Star’s eyes were glued to the track ahead of her.
